Phteah Yeay: A Family-Run Guesthouse in Siem Reap

When I decided to build Phteah Yeay in Siem Reap, Cambodia, I knew I didn’t want to open another hotel. I wanted to make a home — a place where travelers could slow down, share a home-cooked meal, meet local people, and feel the particular warmth that makes Cambodia what it is. We sit just a short ride from Angkor Wat, close enough for an early-morning temple start, far enough to be quiet.

But there’s a deeper reason behind it, one that matters more to me than rooms or reviews.

Why I Built Grandma’s House

Growing up, I heard the stories — Cambodia’s history, the war, everything our families lived through. Survival, loss, sacrifice, and a strength I’m still in awe of. Those stories stayed with me, and as I got older I wanted to give something back. Not a one-time donation, but something that could keep supporting local families for years.

That’s how Phteah Yeay was born: a business where hospitality and community care live side by side, where welcoming a guest also means creating a job, supporting a family, and investing a little in Cambodia’s future.

In Khmer, Phteah Yeay means Grandma’s House. The name isn’t about one grandmother — it’s about what grandmothers mean to so many Cambodian families. A grandmother’s home is where you go when you’re hungry, tired, or just need to feel safe. There’s always food, always someone to talk to, always a place to sit. You don’t have to explain why you’re there. You’re family.

That’s the feeling I wanted to build. Whether it’s your first time in Siem Reap, you’re here for Angkor Wat, or you just want a few quiet days, I want you to feel welcome the moment you arrive.

What Makes a Stay Here Different

Siem Reap has plenty of beautiful hotels, and you have no shortage of choices. What sets us apart isn’t the size of the property or a long list of amenities — it’s the experience.

Six rooms. That’s on purpose. I’d rather our team know your name and how you take your coffee than run a place too big to notice you. After a long day at the temples or the markets, you come back to somewhere genuinely peaceful — the pool, the courtyard, a slow meal, or the rare luxury of having nowhere you need to be.

And Cambodia is so much more than its temples. It’s the food, the language, the small everyday moments most visitors rush past. Learn a few words of Khmer, try a real Cambodian breakfast, wander a local market, sit and talk with someone on our team. Those little moments are usually the ones you remember longest.

Feeling Safe in Siem Reap

If this is your first trip to Cambodia, I understand the question in the back of your mind — is it safe? Siem Reap is one of the most welcoming towns in Southeast Asia, and travelers of all kinds, including women traveling solo, move around it comfortably with the same common sense you’d use anywhere: keep an eye on your bag, use a trusted tuk-tuk or ride app at night, and don’t flash valuables.

What I can promise is this: at Phteah Yeay you’ll always have someone looking out for you. Our team is Cambodian and local, they know the neighborhood, and they’re happy to arrange a driver you can trust, point you to the right market, or tell you honestly which “deal” to skip. If you ever feel unsure about anything — a route, a price, a plan — just ask us. That’s what family is for.

Every Stay Supports Our Community

This is the part I’m proudest of — and it’s already happening, not just an idea. Through Phteah Yeay, our team has distributed more than 3,000 bottles of hand sanitizer across Siem Reap, visiting schools, hospitals, markets, and neighborhoods to teach proper hand hygiene. Every guest who stays with us gets that same education and a small bottle to take along. It sounds simple, but access to basics like this makes a real difference.

We’re not stopping there. We’re growing — step by step — toward more community education, CPR training, and swimming lessons for Cambodian families.

So when you book a room, you’re choosing a small, locally rooted guesthouse with a purpose. You’re supporting our Cambodian team, helping create real jobs, and feeding the programs we’re working to expand. I don’t expect every guest to arrive thinking about community work — maybe you just want a comfortable room, a good pool, and somewhere calm near Angkor Wat, and that’s perfectly fine. But I hope you leave with more than photos: a new friendship, a better feel for Cambodian culture, or simply the sense that you were welcomed into someone’s home.

Come Stay at Grandma’s House

We’re still growing, and still learning. But the heart of it won’t change — a place where people are welcomed, cared for, and treated with kindness, where travel leaves something good behind.

If you’re planning a trip to Siem Reap, I hope you’ll stay with us. Come see Angkor Wat, taste the food, and become part of the Phteah Yeay story.

Because at Grandma’s House, there’s always room for one more.

With love,
Theary
